For Pete’s Sake…

It appears the New York Times is in trouble after an editor called someone a “faggot.”

Look. I want to be an idealist. I really do. If most people were to somehow increase their genuine respect for other people by, say, even 10 percent, the world would be a far better place. But failing this development, we should find and persecute all the kindergarten teachers who neglected to tell a growing list of public figures that calling other people names is bad.

No one can expect people’s innermost attitudes toward hot-button issues like race, class and sexuality to change in an instant. But you can certainly be an adult and control your actions, and it is staggering to me that more people don’t.

All you have to do is not be rude. If you can’t manage that, maybe you should write your next resume in crayon.
